The spirited inhabitants of Morocco celebrate numerous Muslim and national festivals throughout the year. Dates for the majority of religious holidays follow the lunar calendar which makes them impossible to predict according the western calendar used in many other parts of the world. Depending on the type of holiday celebration, festivals may include fasting, dancing, and feasting. All Islamic residents observe Muslim festivals regardless of their duration. Moussems are typical festivals held in honour of saints.

January

Independence Celebration (1 of 5 during the year) Secular.

February

Tafraoute: Celebration of the end of winter rains when there are almond trees covered in small pink and white buds. An extravagant festival.

Aid Al Adha / Aïd el-Khebir: Occurs during the traditional time of pilgrimage to Mecca . Celebrated by both pilgrims travelling to Mecca and those who stay behind at home. Businesses are closed during this celebration, which usually lasts three days.

March & April

Beni Mellal: Cotton harvest moussem.

Fatih Mouharam: Islamic New Year.

Ashura: Falls on the tenth day of Muharram in the Islamic calendar. Commemorates the martyrdom of Husayn bin Ali , the grandson of Muhammed . A ashurah means simply ten in Arabic; hence the festival's name, which literally translated means "the tenth day."

Aid el Arch: The national holiday commemorating the coronation of King Mohammed VI. Festivals include dances, music and shows throughout the Morocco .

Moulay Bousselham : Moussem of Sidi Ahmed Ben Mansour .

Berkane : Harvest moussem for clementines.

El Kelâa des Mgouna: Rose festival to celebrate the new crops.

Id el Mouloud: Prophet Mohammed's birthday. Huge celebrations.

Ben Aissa Moussem: Largest of all the moussems . Includes amazing displays of fantasia, glass swallowing, etc.

June

Music Festival: Musicians from all around the world participate in this festival held in Fez . Lasts for a week.

Independence Day: Weeklong party in Sidi Ifni . Commemorates independence from the Spanish colonial rule in 1975.

Goulimine: Traditionally a fair for camel traders.

Tan Tan: Moussem of Sidi Mohammed Ma el Ainin . Performances of the Guedra dance.

Gnaoua Festival: Musical performances held throughout the city by local, national, and international artists.

July

Marrakesh Popular Arts Festival: Traditional Moroccan folklore with performances by traveling dance troupes and other entertainers from all over the country.

Tetouan: Moussem of Moulay Abdessalem . A very religious celebration executed in great splendour and ceremony.

Sefrou: Festival of the cherry harvest.

Al Hoceima: Festival of the sea harvest.

Celebration of the Throne: Parades and fireworks on the 30th.

August

Asilah Arts Festival: a large exposition for talented artists from Morocco and abroad celebrated in the coastal town of Asilah .

Celebration of the Young: Celebrated the same day as the birthday of Mohammed VI on the 21st.

Setti Fatma: Popular Moussem held in the Ourika valley.

Sefrou: Moussem of Sidi Lahcen el Youssi .

El Jadida: Moussem of Moulay Abdallah . Features fantasias.

Tiznit: Moussem of Sidi Ahmed ou Moussa . Principally a religious festival.

Immouzer du Kandar : Moussem for harvesting apples and pears.

Immouzer des Ida Outanane: Week-long honey moussem .

September

Chefchaouen: Moussem of Sidi Allal al Hadh .

Moulay Idriss Zerhoun: Moussem of Moulay Idriss , the patron saint of Fez . The premier religious moussem . A parade follows the medina and continues to the saint's centrally located tomb.

Imilchil Brides´Fair: Famous marriage festival held in the Middle Atlas , Imilchil (not far from Marrakech ). A showcase for the area's intricately designed and very colourful traditional costumes.

October

The Date Festival: Held in the Northern town of Erfoud every year to celebrate the local delicacy, date fruit.

November

Ramadan: Month of fasting from sunrise to sunset. A time for reflection on spiritual matters. Every evening during Ramadan , families come together for the evening meal (iftar) . Night-time during Ramadan tends to be busy, as everyone gathers for business and leisure activities that last until the early hours of morning.

Independence Day (18th)

Eid al Fitr : Day of celebration which marks the end of Ramadan . Muslims visit family members, enjoy special meals together and wear new clothes. Children receive gifts of money from their relatives. Officially, the celebration lasts for three days, but if it falls in the middle of the week, shops and schools may stay closed for the entire week.

Erfoud: Harvest festival.

December

Rafsaï: Olive harvest festival.
